Marshal of the Wielkopolska Region

MAREK WOŹNIAK

Born on March 5, 1960 in Kalisz.

 

Education
Graduated in Archaeology from the Faculty of History at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, and then completed Postgraduate Studies in Regional Local Government at the Faculty of Law at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and Postgraduate Studies in Policy and Local Management at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Career
From 1990-1994 he was the Secretary of the Suchy Las Commune, and then from December 1994, the Poznań Voivode’s representative for the public procurement system and editor-inchief of the Wielkopolska Public Procurement Bulletin. At that time he also lectured at the Public Procurement Office in Warsaw.

From July 1998 he directed the District Office in Poznań as representative for the establishment of the Poznań district. Concurently, from 1994–1998 he was a councillor of the Suchy Las Commune. In 1998 he was elected to the Poznań District Council and the Poznań District Board. From 2002 to October 2005 he was the Deputy Staroste of the Poznań Poviat. In October 2005 he took the office of the Marshal of the Wielkopolska Region.

In October 2005 he was appointed Marshal of the Wielkopolska Region. In November 2010 local elections he became a member of the 4th term of the Wielkopolska Regional Parliament from the list of the Civic Platform (Platforma Obywatelska), earning the most votes among the council ors (28 592). For the third time he was elected Marshal of the Wielkopolska Region (terms: 10.2005 - 11.2006, 11.2006 - 12.2010 and 12.2010 until now.) The following departments of the Wielkopolska Region Marshal Office are subordinate to the Marshal: the Department of Finance, the Department of Organisation and Human Resources, the Department of Culture, the Department of Control, the Department of Sport and Tourism, the International Cooperation Bureau, the Information Office of the Wielkopolska Region in Brussels, the Bureau of Internal Audit, the Law Office, and the Marshal’s Office.

From July 2006 to March 2007 he chaired the Convention of Marshals of the Regions of the Republic of Poland.

The Activities in the Committee of the Regions
Since February 2006 he has been a Member of the Committee of the Regions in Brussels participating in the work of two Commissions: EDUC (the Commission for Education, Youth and Research) and RELEX (the Commission for External Relations and Decentralised Cooperation). In April 2008 he was appointed the head of the Polish delegation to the Committee of the Regions, and CoR Vice President and a Member of the CoR Bureau.

In a new term of the Committee of the Regions 2010-2015 Marshal Wozniak again serves as its Vice President, a Member of the CoR Bureau and the head of the Polish delegation. On 11th of February 2010 he was also elected Vice President of the Commission for Territorial Cohesion Policy COTER, and from mid-2012 he will take the position of the President of the Commission. He is also a Member of the Commission for Citizenship, Governance, Institutional and External Affairs (CIVEX) - the scope of CIVEX work also includes the Eastern Partnership. On the 2nd of December 2010 he was elected Vice President of the Group of the European People's Party in the Committee of the Regions (EPP-CoR).

For his public service he has been honored with:

  • The Gold Cross of Merit by the President of the Republic of Poland,
  • The "Ad Perpetuam Rei Memoriam" Medal by the Voivode of the Wielkopolska
    Region,
  • The "The Rose of Franciszka Cegielska" for the most outstanding personalities in the
    Local Government’
  • The title of the "Most Admired Marshal of a Voivodship in 2009" by the Adam Smith
    Foundation,
  • The Honorary Badge of Merit for the City of Konin,
  • The Badge of Merit for the City of Kalisz.
  • Bronze Medal of Merits for the Police Force
